4 Solid Factors to Consider Before Starting An Organic Food Business

Organic foods are becoming very popular nowadays. The term “organic” denotes how agricultural products are grown and processed. In order for products to be labeled “organic” there must be some guidelines and requirements that must be met.

Organic crops must be grown in non-contaminated areas and should have no modifications whatsoever. The use of synthetic pesticides, sewage sludge-based fertilizer, petroleum-based fertilizers or bioengineered genes (GMOs) in food crops affects the natural make-up of food. Crops supplied with these materials cannot be termed as “organic”.

The field of organic food has grown from a billion-dollar in 1990 to $25 billion-plus in the 21st century, according to Forbes. If you have organic food crops, the market is big and enough to accommodate you.

Before venturing into this lucrative business of organic foods, it is worthwhile to have a clear blueprint of what you expect and what needs to be done.

Factors to consider before starting an organic food business;

1. Have adequate supply of organic food

To succeed in this business, you need to have a stable supply of organic foods. If you have a small piece of land having organic foods, make an effort of increasing the capacity of the land. If you decide to buy from farmers, make sure you connect to more than one farmer. Talk to them also in order to agree on the supply pattern. There are websites which can help get farms and farmers with the kind of organic foods you want to sell. A steady supply is important as it will ensure that you are in the market at all times and therefore building a good connection with your customers.

2. Identify Where to Sell

It is good to note that not all people care about organic foods, and not everyone can afford to buy. To do well in this business, you need to find a region where customers care about organic foods and also have the cash to buy.

3. Marketing Strategy

Marketing is a tool that cannot be avoided in any kind of business. The type of marketing strategy you use will determine the kind of results you get in your business. For your organic food business to be successful, you need to have a good approach towards the market. For instance, you can donate some foods to hunger stricken areas. This will create a positive picture towards the owner of the business and the business itself. Many businesses are using this method and have succeeded.

4. Certification and Labeling

Before you venture into organic food business, it is good to learn the requirements for labeling organic products. A product that is 100% organic may have the USDA organic label. Food that is around 95% may carry the new seal and the one that is 70% organic will list the organic ingredients on the packaging material. You need to buy these products to farmers who can certify their products are truly organic. However, organic products farmers that sell less than $5,000 annually don’t have to get certified, but you will need to confirm they do follow the organic standards given by the federal.

Adequate supply of organic foods will ensure that many people have access to these foods. This will as a result increase the level of healthy eating behavior. It is encouraged that we have many people entering into this business to increase organic food availability.
