The demand for organic food is increasingly high as people are switching from synthetic. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines organic agriculture as “using methods that preserve the environment and avoid most synthetic materials, such as pesticides and antibiotics.” People are waking up to the call of environment preservation and conservation.
Why is it that majority of
people are opting for organic food?
1. Higher Nutritional Value
Local
organic food have less retention time between when harvested and at the table.
Phytochemicals such as vitamins, antioxidants and minerals are maintained which
could have otherwise been reduced during processing. There is neither chemical
additive added nor genetic modification done.
2. Support of Biodiversity
According to
research, in the 20th century, 75% of agricultural genetic diversity
was lost. Most organic farmers, plant varied crops and rotate them to prolong
the harvesting season. It is contrary to
the conventional farming, which concentrates on mono cropping with less varied plants.
This has created a need to preserve local food heritage through bio-diverse farms.
3. Promotion of Local Economy
Local
farmers and growers are benefiting from the sale of these produce. This is
going in long way to helping communities grow in their economy at the grass
root level. Jobs are being created in the process and the locality is able to
grow as money is kept within.
Our organic farmers are doing a great
job, Kudos!
4. Reduced Environment
Pollution
Environment
pollution has become a major a concern, with many bodies now trying to combat
the situation. Large artificial agricultural models are leading to soil erosion,
increased growth of weeds, development of bugs resistant to pesticides and
herbicides. Organic farming does not depend on petroleum-based fertilizers and
pesticides. Thus, there are no chemical run -offs hence environment
conservation.
5. Food Security Improvement
Research is
indicating that the world population is increasing at high rate than the supply
of food. As a result food crisis issues are being heard in different countries
all over the world. The price of food is increasing tremendously, putting communities
with less purchasing power at a predicament.
However, the solution to this is promoting local organic farming. This
means that farmer s will get fresh produce from their farms at a low cost. This
in a great extent promotes food security.
6. Supply of Safe Food
In the
recent past, people are biased to what they feel is safe for them. With less
time being taken from harvesting to putting the food on the table, organic food
has become an option. Food safety risks are minimal!
7. Low Investment Cost
Starting up
organic farming is less expensive as compared to conventional. There is almost zero input of the expensive
chemical fertilsers, genetically modified seeds and pesticides. The profit
margins are also attractive to potential investors.
8. Preservation of
Natural Taste
Many people are
turning to organic food as they believe it tastes better and natural.
Point to Take Home
We are just
about to experience a great outburst of organic food demand. If you have the potential
of starting up an organic food business, this is the time!
