United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines organic agriculture as “using methods that preserve the environment and avoid most synthetic materials, such as pesticides and antibiotics.” People are waking up to the call of environment preservation and conservation.   

Why is it that majority of people are opting for organic food?

1.      Higher Nutritional Value

Local organic food have less retention time between when harvested and at the table. Phytochemicals such as vitamins, antioxidants and minerals are maintained which could have otherwise been reduced during processing. There is neither chemical additive added nor genetic modification done.

2.      Support of Biodiversity

According to research, in the 20th century, 75% of agricultural genetic diversity was lost. Most organic farmers, plant varied crops and rotate them to prolong the harvesting season.  It is contrary to the conventional farming, which concentrates on mono cropping with less varied plants. This has created a need to preserve local food heritage through bio-diverse farms.

3.      Promotion of Local Economy

Local farmers and growers are benefiting from the sale of these produce. This is going in long way to helping communities grow in their economy at the grass root level. Jobs are being created in the process and the locality is able to grow as money is kept within.

4.      Reduced Environment Pollution

Environment pollution has become a major a concern, with many bodies now trying to combat the situation. Large artificial agricultural models are leading to soil erosion, increased growth of weeds, development of bugs resistant to pesticides and herbicides. Organic farming does not depend on petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides. Thus, there are no chemical run -offs hence environment conservation.

5.      Food Security Improvement

Research is indicating that the world population is increasing at high rate than the supply of food. As a result food crisis issues are being heard in different countries all over the world. The price of food is increasing tremendously, putting communities with less purchasing power at a predicament.  However, the solution to this is promoting local organic farming. This means that farmer s will get fresh produce from their farms at a low cost. This in a great extent promotes food security.

6.      Supply of Safe Food

In the recent past, people are biased to what they feel is safe for them. With less time being taken from harvesting to putting the food on the table, organic food has become an option.  Food safety risks are minimal!
7.      Low Investment Cost

Starting up organic farming is less expensive as compared to conventional.  There is almost zero input of the expensive chemical fertilsers, genetically modified seeds and pesticides. The profit margins are also attractive to potential investors.

8.      Preservation of Natural Taste

Many people are turning to organic food as they believe it tastes better and natural.
